Product Review The classic, one-light, six-blade indoor ceiling fan has a look that balances well with almost any decor. It features a white finish, integrated opal mushroom glass light fixture, and six MDF white/white wash blades. This fan features a three-speed reversible switch that allows for summer/winter operation. The fan provides airflow at up to 3,925 cubic feet per minute (cfm) at its highest speed. It is rated to operate at 45 watts at high speed (without the lighting on), which gives it an airflow efficiency rating of 87 cfm per watt. (As a comparison, 36-inch to 48-inch ceiling fans have airflow efficiency ranging from approximately 71 to 86 cfm per watt at high speed. Designed for rooms up to 80 square feet (roughly 10 by 8 feet), the Petite utilizes a 153 by 9 millimeter cold rolled steel motor with dual capacitor for air circulation. The Westinghouse Petite lighting comes from one Candelabra Base, G16 1/2 Lamp, 60 Watt maximum (not included). The MDF blades have a white finish and a 18-degree pitch. Tips Ceiling fans can save you money in winter (Reverse Blade Direction) as well as summer: up to 10 percent in heating costs and up to 40 percent in air conditioning costs. Placement is important. Install the ceiling fan with the blades 10 to 12 inches below the ceiling and 7 to 9 feet above the floor. This Westinghouse fan is backed by a lifetime motor warranty and a two-year warranty on all other parts. What’s in the Box Harmony ceiling fan 12-inch lead wire mounting hardware installation instructions Customer Reviews I bought this ceiling fan for my kitchen, which is 7 feet by 9 feet. It’s a perfect fit for that size room. The fan was easy to install and performs wonderfully–plenty of air flow and reasonably quiet. I noticed that some of the other reviewers complained about the noise, but I just didn’t experience that. Now to the light. It’s limited to one 60-watt incandescent candelabra bulb. That is hardly enough to light even the smallest room. If you’re wondering why the light source is so small, you can thank your federal government for deciding that it was their job to dictate what kind of lights our ceiling fans can use. Check out the Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPACT 2005) for more information. You can get around this limitation by using a 100-watt equivalent CFL bulb (produces 100 watts worth of light but only uses 23 watts of energy, so it’s perfectly safe to use in a socket rated for 60 watts.) I found some of these bulbs at my local big box hardware store. You can find these bulbs online by searching for “sylvania 26904” (the big box store should show up in this search). They’re basically the standard “twisty” 100-watt CFL bulbs but with a candelabra base. One problem with using these bulbs, however, is that the glass globe supplied with the ceiling fan will no longer fit, so you’ll need to buy a bigger globe. A replacement globe can be had for about $6 also at your local big box hardware store. The one I bought was a “Litex 6-inch Clear Vanity Lighting Glass”. Just about any globe should work, just make sure that the neck size is 3-1/4 inches and that the distance from top to bottom is about 6 inches. Also, for anyone who’s worried about fan blade clearance for kitchen cabinets or other room obstacles, the distance from the ceiling to the lowest point on the fan blade is 7 inches. This was an important measurement for me in acquiring a “hugger-style” fan. If you are purchasing this just based on the size and appearance, the fan is great. I think the thing is noisy and has a constant low level hum. I have 4 other Hunter fans in my home and all are extremely quiet – Unfortunately, this was the only one I could find in this small size so I was limited to Westinghouse. It went into my daughter’s room and she says that I am the only one to notice the hum so I guess it’s OK for 50 bucks.
