Manufacturers recognize the need for a ceiling fan made for low ceilings and produce different styles and designs to handle this need. As with regular fans, these low profile fans can still have the same features and options available. While the design of a low profile fan varies, the recommended installation of one will provide optimal airflow in a room with a low ceiling while keeping safety the main priority.

Great, easy to install very quiet fan!

I bought this fan/light combo almost 3 years ago and have been very happy with it. It still is very quiet and has very little friction (blades spin long after power is off), so I know it’s not using very much electricity to run it. I have the 44″ version for a smallish living room and it works great. In fact, I’m using it right now to push the heat from the heater off the ceiling. If you have a bigger room, I suggest the larger version (52″, I think).

The dimmer system if fairly simple and works well. The light is not extremely powerful, but it does kick out enough light for basic use. I would recommend at least one other light source. In my living room, it works really well with 4 ceiling cans.

Customers comments:

This Cirrus fan is a quality fan that works well and looks very modern. I am very pleased with it and highly recommend it.

I know it cost a little more than those fans at Home Depot, but Cirrus Fan is well worth the price. It is very well constructed. And, it LOOKS GREAT!

Just installed the Cirrus Hugger Fan and it is everything I had hoped it would be … and more!! Installation was easy as long as the directions are followed. Note: If you purchase the wall outlet AND the remote control option, the outlet MUST BE INSTALLED FIRST BEFORE THE REMOTE CONTROL WORKS.

I also ordered the optional spot light kit and this is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED .. it really adds ALOT to the overlook look and feel of the fan.

My only slight comment is that I wish that when the fan is on High, it was a bit faster. Other than that its worth every penny.

Customer rating of 4.3 out of 5. Some verified customer comments:

Best ceiling fan I’ve ever bought. Installed in under 2 hours (including beer break) without any problems at all. Fan is quiet and without any wobble at all. The motor cover is a rather heavy ceramic that may require you to have an extra pair of hands to hold it in place while the screws are inserted. No complaints whatsoever.

This is the fourth Calais I got for my house, these are high quality fans, love them, noiseless, and they look awesome.

It was very challenging to fit the canopy on when installing this. It’s heavy and the screw holes are not tapered to direct the screws in the holes. Definitely better if you have someone help you install this one but worth it. This fan is really gorgeous, quiet and operates as you would expect of a fan for this price.

Clearance Between Fan and Ceiling

During winter, the fan will be in cooling mode (think  forward or counter-clockwise). The magic distance of 8 inches of clearance between the fan and the ceiling is required to allow optimum airflow into the fan blades. For every 2 inches of ceiling clearance below this minimum space, airflow will decrease by as much as 25 percent. Most ceiling fans come with three-inch downrods so a room with a standard 8 foot ceiling will have approximately 7 feet 4 inches of clearance from the floor.

Minimum Height Requirements

“The National Electrical Code (NEC), or NFPA 70, is a regionally adoptable standard for the safe installation of electrical wiring and equipment in the United States.” Wikipedia.

While the NEC standardizes ceiling fan installation issues such as junction boxes for proper support, the NEC includes no specific language stipulating ceiling fan height. But, national building codes require the fan blades of any ceiling fan to be at least 7 feet (or 84 inches) from the floor. As a result, you cannot install any ceiling fan in a room where the ceiling is lower than 7 1/2 feet.

Types of Low Clearance Fans

Rooms with ceilings that are too low, are going to have disadvantages to the efficiency and safety issues of having a ceiling fan. Because these units have less than the optimum 8 inch clearance from the ceiling, airflow and performance is decreased. As side note, a option to reduce the danger of accidental contact with the blades, move a large furniture such as a table directly beneath will help from walking into the blades.

Even cheap ceiling fans can be installed in a room with low ceiling, fans that are less than $100 will move very little air. Look for fans with the Highest Quality and CFM ratings. Commonly used phrases to describe fans where the motor housing mounts directly to the ceiling rather than hanging from a short downrod are:

  • A hugger or low profile ceiling fan is usually installed on a low ceilings, they can also be used in rooms with vaulted ceilings when installed on the joist.
  • Flush-mount ceiling fans have the motor housing mounted directly to the ceiling. These fan types are specifically designed for ceilings that are anywhere between 7 1/2 feet and 8 feet high. Most flush-mount ceiling fans have their blades hanging 4 to 6 inches higher than the typical ceiling fan.
